An analysis of e-paper display modules - the impact of reading lights and materials on thickness and weight

It is said that E Ink  Technology has recently launched a number of new " e-paper display modules " in the product section of its official website for the public to check the parameters of the products. There are many interesting things worth talking about!

Everyone knows that the simpler the composition of the screen, the lighter and thinner the reader will naturally be. Therefore, many manufacturers will consider whether to equip a reading light, because it will have a lot of impact in terms of weight and thickness! Looking at the 6-inch module, whether it is the color E Ink Kaleido 3 model or the latest E Ink Carta1300 black and white model, only the one without the front light assembly only weighs about 20 grams and is only 0.55mm (color)/0.63mm ( Black and white) (Surprisingly, the color version with a layer of filter paper is even thinner!). If equipped with a reading light, the weight will suddenly increase to about 47 grams, and the thickness will more than triple, with a thickness of about 1.94mm. Whether it is color or black and white, the situation of the 7-inch module is similar. Without the front light assembly, it only weighs about 24 grams and is only 0.55mm (color)/0.68mm (black and white) thick. When equipped with a reading light, it becomes about It weighs 62 grams and is about 1.85mm thick.

Speaking of screens, you may know that the backplane materials are mainly divided into two types: glass and plastic (the so-called flexible screens). The production cost of the latter is much more expensive than the former, but the advantage is that it is lighter and thinner. And the screen will be more durable and not fragile. Comparing the common 10.3-inch glass back model with the 10.65-inch flexible screen that has recently been adopted by manufacturers, you will understand that there are many differences between the two. Without the front light assembly, the 10.3-inch glass back model weighs about 60 grams and is about 0.7mm thick, while the latter only weighs about 23 grams (amazing!) and is only 0.347mm thick!

Finally, the author also discovered the E Ink Kaleido 3 Outdoor 25.3-inch display module released by Yuantai last year. For such a large size, it only weighs about 370 grams and is only about 0.78mm thick! No wonder some manufacturers adopt it and develop it into portable advertising billboards.

Well, I hope E Ink Technology will continue to work hard to develop lighter, thinner, and more importantly, cheaper display modules, so that more manufacturers can launch more readers with better experience. Let our group of users benefit.
